kron. 4 morning news thanks for waking up with us. sorry and i'm james. we'll start the hour with a check of and traffic. before we get to the headlines, the weather today. >> yeah. kind of a hot pulling out the 90's in some spots. yeah. oh, here we go. another hot wind and even hotter than yesterday. indeed. some low 90's for some of our further inland areas. this morning, skies are clear out there, but we have seen the return of a little bit of cool coastal air. that is helping us out at least this morning. you can see the evidence of that through the golden gate. just a little bit of fog, a very, very shallow marine layer that's going to burn off quickly. so while we've got to enjoy it, we are seeing much lighter winds than yesterday. and that means less of that warm, dry air pushing out to the coast. temperatures in the 50's to 60's currently 59 conquered in oakland at 62 while santa rosa and nevada each at 59 right now we are seeing a much cooler morning than yesterday. so like i said, enjoy this little break

from the heat because this afternoon, in many cases, we are even getting hotter. daytime highs in the upper 80's to even low 90's for a few spots which i'll get to in your full forecast rain. all right, john, thank you for that. track in his barn alert for most of the morning. there's no red and orange line between richmond and macarthur than earlier. mechanical issues on bart. thankfully, no other lives are impacted. but if that's your route, i want to drive or maybe even take a bus. the bridges and highways look good enough to drive right now. 15 minute ride into the city. 7, bridge somewhere around 14. so that's pretty light for us. started there 40 minutes on urges overfill bridge and 9. it right would be light. and the golden gate bridge we see that fall that slowing a lot of people down this morning. looks like it's starting to improve and lift a little bit 30 minutes. 37 to that whole story. james, back to you. thank you. are a nato to president biden waking up in the bay area? yeah. he's going to be attending a campaign fundraiser later this morning where he's expected to meet. >> with protesters who anticipating his arrival

conference will tran is live outside the fairmont hotel in san francisco where the president is staying will. just to piggyback on what john was talking about, the heat. the protesters were like to turn up the heat. >> on president biden and we are a couple of blocks from the fairmont hotel. and i got to tell you, i've covered president biden in the bay area many times as he is a frequent visitor of this location. but this time you see heavy police presence, secret service. they are out and they have their jackets that announced to the world. they are secret service because they know that the protesters will be looking out for president biden. let me show you video of the president arriving yesterday in the bay area. he landed at moffett field, came into san francisco, did not do very much yesterday. today is his day. he will leave san francisco a lot richer than when he arrived because he is strictly doing fundraising.

the first event is at 11 o'clock this morning. he was in the bay area just a couple of months ago. also for fundraising, today's event, a couple of hours are now reportedly just 2 of 10 could be anywhere between $20250,000. many will go to another fundraiser before hopping back on air force one to leave this afternoon to go to seattle to do more fundraising. he is in town to raise money for his re-election because he knows former president donald trump. he is raising money on is in. so it will be a battle all the way from now until november. yesterday was exactly 6 months from the day of the election. so clock is ticking on president biden as well as former president donald trump. and the clock is ticking on protesters. they've already announced that they would protest knowing full well that the president will be in town today. of course, the president does not announce

his route, but we understand that he will leave the fairmont hotel short time from now. so i'm going to monitor the situation and the protesters. i'm sure we'll monitor it as well. we do know with certainty they said they would be at the fundraiser at 11 o'clock this morning in portola valley. obviously they've been campaigning excuse me, protesting on college campuses throughout the country. this is a time where he they could be within feet of the president as he drives a bite. >> see what plays out. thank you will. and president biden was in silicon valley campaign fundraising yesterday and so was first lady jill biden. she attended a fundraiser in canfield. 4. the marion county teacher of the year honors and she spoke not about politics, but about teachers and education and how important it is. joe biden heads to southern california today and as well said the president will be here. breaking news from overnight. take a look at this big fire in a commercial

building that firefighters had to put out the wee hours. it was about 02:00am this morning. this fire broke out mill mott drive the fire department sharing the photos of them battling the flames when they got there. the fire was already going right through the roof. they managed knock down in just about an hour or so at 03:00am they were already mopping up and investigating. >> well, another big story that we're following this morning. the fact that oakland international airport now has a new name and a legal fight to come along with us still in oakland, but says san francisco and san francisco's not very happy about that. we have this coverage now as we take a closer look at the issue. >> san francisco city attorney david chiu has already sued on behalf of the city. and on wednesday he sent a letter to the port of oakland urging them to reconsider and instead have both maybe oakland and san francisco work together to come up with an alternative name. but the port of oakland moved ahead with their plans and they say that they'll also have a response to san francisco's lawsuit. there are

now 2 bay area airports with the name san francisco in their title. >> a unanimous vote by the oakland port board thursday approved the switch from oakland international airport. to san francisco bay oakland international airport. nobody owns the san francisco bay and it is the most identify identifiable geographic indicator. and we happen to sit on on the san francisco bay and we just want people to know where we are so they can come enjoy. >> our beautiful city port port president barbara lesslie, along with other commissioners, says the name change will increase the airport's visibility. >> well, also giving potential travelers more options in the bay area. and a name kings change can certainly do that. that brings that knowledge for people past the mississippi to really understand where oakland sits in the greater bay area and also internationally, really a pub understanding from people from around the world where oakland is in this greater bay area. but the city of san francisco

does not want this new name to happen. a lawsuit claims that infringes on san francisco international airport's trademark in a statement to kron for the san francisco city attorney's office says it is disappointing that oakland chose to ignore our multiple offers to collaborate an alternative names and avoid litigation. we have no choice but to move forward with next steps in our trademark lawsuit, port attorney barry richardson has requested for a declaratory judgment as a counterclaim to the lawsuit. she hopes the court will agree that san francisco bay is a geographic term and not exclusive to the city nor county of san francisco. we were not seeking money damages with that were only seeking a declaration from the court that we can continue to use the mark that the board to support. some residents did voice their concerns before thursday's vote saying if there's going to be more air traffic, that's going to create more air pollution in the city. >> but business leaders and

city leaders such as councilmember noel gallo said the name change is going to be good for the airport in oakland, dan thorn kron. 4 news. >> well, speaking of flying in alaska airlines flight hit a bird while landing at sfo. this was yesterday afternoon. you can see this photo that dent there on the plane's engine cowling in the upper left corner of that. so over ring you see that dent. yeah. alaska airlines says this was a flight from boston pulled after it landed. it was pulled from service. it's been taken out for inspection. no emergency had to be declared again. it was just strike that didn't go into the engine itself. >> 808, right now. santa clara county authorities madn one of the biggest fentanyl seizures ever. and it was drugs that were all around. >> a baby. they found 13 pounds of drugs under a baby's crib at a home in san jose which they rated on wednesday. they found 25,000 fentanyl pills in a backpack. they found marijuana a few feet away from babies play pen and

they found cocaine right next to the baby's formula in the kitchen. the childs parents, 27 year-old octavian marino and 23 year-old crystal delgado now face multiple charges. >> well, later this morning, governor gavin newsom is expected to unveil his updated budget for the coming fiscal year. a lot of tough decisions had to be made. let's take a closer look at the numbers now. crawford's michael thomas in the newsroom. >> hey, good morning, everyone. that's right. lots going on this morning in this budget proposal by governor gavin newsom is also known as the may budget revision. and will essentially give us a closer look on how the governor plans to spend this next year, fiscally and really explain how his administration plans to ultimately address the multibillion dollar deficit. it's currently facing now. the non-partisan legislative analyst's office says the state is currently facing a projected deficit about 73 billion dollars. however, governor gavin newsom has said previously he believes that amount is much lower than that. in today's presentation, he's likely to

announce where he thinks the deficit stands in the plans. he has to close that gap. now, this could include cuts in different areas across the state in according to the associated press. this is actually the second year in a row that california has had this deficit and the state has avoided some major cuts when it comes to ongoing programs and services throughout the state. however, they have made cuts in general on one-time spending and delayed and other spending while also borrowing from other account. we spoke with lawmakers on both sides of the aisle about the deficit and what they expect to hear from the governor later today. >> we know the revenues generally coming in lower than the forecast and that's concerning. and so we are prepared for some very difficult choices at the bottom line is they're going to make cuts. >> and it's really the democrats. they're in a bind because they made all these promises to people all these things. they said they're going to do and now they're going to have to break those promises because we simply don't have the revenue and the money to actually do undoubtedly the governor will make some additional loans and

>> 14 is the time and fire officials now preparing people for the start of fire season as the weather start to heat up and dry out following a what was a pretty wet and snowy winter. it's possible that we could see a delayed fire season because there's still a lot of moisture in the vegetation out there, but they still want people know what to do in case of an emergency. >> but you should you be evacuated. you your go bag do you know where you and your family are going to meet up? if you're evacuated now is it is the time that you want to be creating not defensible space and you see that video people doing that work. fire crews also suggest maybe signing up for emergency alerts in your county and make sure that you are well informed. >> if an emergency occurs when we get out as soon as possible, looking at that video just let you know a report from tahoe. so their

relaxed a whole lot. now, still just a bit breezy up in vacaville, but that wind was carrying the hot, dry air out to the coastline. and we didn't have the fresh coastal breeze. today. we're tapping back in just a little bit of that cool ocean air only at the coastline tomorrow morning. expect fog across the entire bay shore as that cool air slips back in. that will begin a process of relief. and by sunday after a foggy morning for mother's day, we will see temperatures dropping a little bit. so that is some good high pressure is certainly in place resulting in sinking air, generally dry and contributing to hot conditions. hot inland, foggy towards the coast at times, especially tomorrow morning. sounds like a summer forecast for sure. temperatures today are in the 60's to 70's for san francisco and other coastal spots, which is going to be the respite from the heat of the rest of the bay 80's for most of the rest of us seeing carlos 84 degrees today, south bay temperatures in the upper 80's just shy of 90 in the east bay looking at some mid 80's for your highs.

macarthur. that's earlier mechanical issues has been a thing for all of the morning. that's how long that's going to go along with no lines are impacted on any other lines. if you are traveling along bart checking on those drive times along 80 crockett out towards the maze about 32 send it back to you thanks a lot. >> okay. 8.18, is the time and another mail carrier was robbed in the bay area. this time in dublin. we has a video kron. 4 sarah stinson has more. >> home security camera captures the terrifying moment. a mail carrier in dublin was robbed at gunpoint. this happened monday afternoon around 4.30, on a bespoke court video shows 2 masked men wearing all black approached the male woman. one points a gun at her dublin. police say the men demanded the carriers mailbox key and phone. you can see her go to the usps truck to get her phone and handed over. then the 2 men run off. thankfully, the male woman was

not physically injured. neighbors called 9-1-1 and police arrived shortly after to investigate. i went down to cul-de-sac. >> probably within 10 or 15 minutes after happen after seeing police in his neighborhood, mike grant went down to check it out. once he learned about the robbery, grant went to check his high-quality security camera system to see if it captured anything useful. >> that's when he saw what he believes to be the getaway car narrowed it down to this. a blue grants as police and the u.s. postal inspectors. investigators came by to get the video. he's lived in this dublin neighborhood for nearly 30 years and says only recently has there been a spike in crime. we've had a rash of crime on this west side of town. with that, something that kind starts to wake me up. grant says he's been talking with neighbors about ways to protect their homes, to start putting some cameras up to help. >> and alarm systems and everything like that. be a

little proactive is what i'm trying tell people. he also attended the dublin city council meeting tuesday to talk about the importance of security cameras, especially after monday's robbery. they got to start doing something. we >> have a lot of cameras in town, but they're not up in these neighborhoods. as for the mail carrier grant says he's checked in on her. she's going to take a month off of work to emotionally recover. you know, we're always out talking to yourself like that. so she's kind like family. >> so i stopped by just to make sure she was ok, i let her know that we're all thinking about the postal service is offering $150,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the thieves. i'm sara stinson reporting in dublin kron. 4 news. >> well, meantime, contra costa county is now focusing on combating the opioid crisis in the east bay. the county recently received 5 million dollars to spend from national lawsuits that were filed against opioid manufacturers. they hosted a listening session yesterday in concord.

they wanted to hear from the public about. how best to spend the money community members that were there suggested maybe focusing on some of the underserved communities. first. >> yeah. at a point where >> our approach has to also include some harm reduction in. this is something that we didn't do. he started alcohol and drugs. but we know that they they the crisis is forcing us to change our approach and meet the needs the community. >> well, the next sessions r may 15th and 16th, one of the 15th will be virtual. but the one of the 16th that will be in-person scheduled in richmond. >> it's a 21 and a nice pay. alameda county that have enough inspectors to inspect restaurants for health. and this is affecting some fast food restaurants. according to the alameda county health department. the l pollo loco off of international boulevard in oakland was inspected on monday for the first time in more than a year. it passed but received 5 violations, including food, services that

they had to clean up and some cleaning supplies that were not properly stored. bathrooms had some broken doors, the low staffing of health inspectors comes as mcdonald's and oakland was shut down last friday because the health inspector found rat droppings. and a rat in a trap and many other violations. the health department says they are working to fill the vacant inspector positions. >> state regulators approve a plan that could mean major changes for your utility bill. capitol correspondent eytan give you details. plus, a lot of reaction a 25 is the time

the san francisco bay ferry is planning some major expansions throughout the bay area. >> the board of directors is planning to expand and electrify the system by 20 to 50. the agency currently operates in alameda oakland, richmond, to san francisco, south san francisco and valero. the first expansion planning, though, would be to expand to berkeley and redwood city and then eventually all the way up to the delta with antioch and pittsburgh and then also lower on the peninsula to with foster city. i know i know it works, but when i hear electrify like water, it makes me they get it. that around? >> okay. 25 right now for your money. we have to make a lot of money to afford a rent here in the bay area. zillow just did a study and they found that you need to make almost $133,000 per year in san jose to read comfortably. that makes it the most expensive

city in this study in san jose. the average household spends 25% of their income on rent and san francisco came in 4th. the study says that you need to make $121,000 to rent comfortably in san francisco. so a san francisco woman has been convicted of stealing more than $60,000 worth of merchandise from the target at stonestown galleria. 43 year-old has used a graves would take items go to the self checkout scan every item and then insert a small amount of money and leave. and the sfpd followed her and surveilled or and twice. they say she left target. she was later seen selling the the un plaza, the da's office confirms that she stole over the course of 120 different visits between 2020 2021, she was convicted of one felony count of grand theft and 53 misdemeanor counts of petty theft. >> we're going to take a break in a 27 coming up next on the

shallow marine layer that is had the opportunity to push back in and just the very remnants of fog that had been shrouding out a little bit of the golden gate earlier this morning. it's a sign of those offshore winds which are really dry noticeable yesterday, really relaxing now and that's allowing slowly, but surely some cooler coastal air to slip back in that will eventually cool us off by the finish of the weekend. definitely having an impact this morning with temperatures down in the 50's to 60's. we actually have some relief from those hotter temperatures last night. you can see that reflected here in our current temps as much as 16 degrees cooler than yesterday. at the same time. so you think would be in for a cooler afternoon. but that shallow marine layer burns right off. we're actually going to be right back to the heat, even warmer than we were yesterday. i will talk of changes and the eventually cool down. we have this weekend. still ahead right now. all right, john, thank you for that low bar alert. we still have no red or orange line between richmond and macarthur station. the new update we do have is the capitol corridor. are providing mutual aid. remember, you can also drive

edison and san diego, gas and electric to impose a fixed charge on most of their customers, monthly utility bills. >> specifically the plan includes a new flat fee of $24.15 per month. coming up to about $290 per year. in return, the utilities will cut their electricity prices by 5 to $0.7 per kilowatt hour. supporters say the plan will help pay for grid maintenance and in the long run will make it more affordable for californians who need to use electricity for green technology like overnight electric vehicle charging backers also believe it low income californians noting per the plan those already enrolled in the low income, california alternate rates for energy program or care. >> will face a dramatically discount a monthly fee of $6. this is a fair proposal. >> implementing a reasonable fix charge that help support the fixed costs of the grid. we commend the cpc on taking action today in support of the fixed charge. >> and because of their action today, relief is coming to

them in late 2025 and pg and e customers will see the plan to cut for them in early 2026. reporting in sacramento eytan wallace kron. 4 news. >> a 34 is the time in the east bay. a bounty hunter now has been charged with murder in connection with a fatal shooting. newark police confirms 49 year-old bail fugitive recovery agents. the bounty hunter charles price and a bail bond agent. we're trying to find a man when an altercation broke out and after exchange of gunfire them and they were hunting, died at the hospital. the victim who died is identified as 42 year-old bay area resident richard turner. police said in march the turner failed to appear in court on weapons charges. and so there was a warrant out for his arrest. the da's office has now charged price, though, with one count of second-degree murder. in east. bay mother is outraged after learning that the drunk driver who hit and killed the father of her child will not serve a single day in

prison. the victim red turnage see in these photos died on mother's day back in 2021. he was out for a walk in oakland when a car veered onto the sidewalk and crashed into him behind the wheel was 67 year-old timothy amano, a wealth manager who lives in piedmont. and he pleaded guilty to running from the scene, leaving the victim to die in his own wife injured in the passenger seat. that wife told police that the model spent the day drinking in san francisco at golf clubs and restaurants before driving back to oakland. on wednesday, an alameda county judge sentenced a model to a six-year term with 3 years credit for his time already served at home in piedmont. and as for the remaining 3 years, the judge ruled that a monica serve that at home as well. the victim's partner was irate when she talked to the media outside. >> greg made the choice to make me breakfast in bed with arson and to take a walk. and timothy hermano make the

across the city. authorities say tuesday morning's incident began with jefferson hitting one person while doing donuts at market in jones and then leading police on a chase across town during that pursuit. prosecutors say jefferson hit a 14 year-old girl who was in a crosswalk outside francisco middle school. prosecutors say a vehicle was stopped to let the teenager cross. but jefferson drove around that car and hit her. the student will survive but has a broken ankle, a dislocated shoulder and bruising to the head during thursday's hearing jefferson made and inaudible outburst when prosecutors said he showed no remorse once arrested and instead went into a profane tirade about his driving skills. prosecutors also told the judge jefferson has 14 prior felony convictions, including one in 2018 for battery with injury on a school employee. the judge called tuesday's incident egregious and said releasing jefferson on bail
